The Trail of Clues in Restless Leg Syndrome: Part I
OK friends, let’s take a quick quiz straight from the pages of the National Institute of Health. These 4 questions are a simple “yes” or “no” answer, and will help identify if this next set of clues resonates with your current situation.
✅Do you have a strong and often overwhelming need or urge to move your legs? (Often the urge may be accompanied by abnormal, unpleasant or uncomfortable sensations.)
✅Does the urge to move your legs start (or get worse) during rest and inactivity?
✅Does the urge to move your legs worsen in the evenings/at night?
✅Is the urge to move your legs partially or totally relieved by movement (at least temporarily)?
If you have answered yes to these questions, this post series may shed light on both why your legs may be restless and (next week) natural ways to help relieve the situation. Bear in mind that beyond the questions above, there are several mimickers of restless leg syndrome, so the process of elimination may come in handy! Poor circulation in the legs, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and ADD/ADHD are a few disorders known for restless leg mimicry.
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a very common condition affecting about 10% of adults in the USA and even some children. There are several medications commonly used to treat RLS. According to many pharmacy clients I’ve worked with over the years, the medications are often minimally effective, not without unpleasant side effects (GI distress, constipation and/or diarrhea), and do not address root causes.
RLS is not generally a precursor of things to come thankfully….but it is highly annoying and life disruptive nonetheless, especially as it often leads to chronic insomnia.
As any good detective would do, you’ll want to discover the motive (root cause) of your RLS. Motives vary in each case, right?
*Occasionally, restless legs may be blamed on genetics, but that is the exception rather than the rule. Overwhelmingly, restless leg syndrome is given the dubious distinction of having an idiopathic origin. My personal feeling is that “idiopathic” is an overused medical term used when not enough time has been spent looking at clues to find the root cause! Understandably so….. insurance companies do not usually allow doctors the time or tools (comprehensive lab work) to actually find the source of the problem.
There are MANY factors leading to or exacerbating restless leg syndrome:
*Approximately 15% of RLS cases have an underlying iron deficiency. Iron deficiency may be easily checked with lab work. Checking iron alone is insufficient. Ferritin levels also need to be evaluated.
*Other nutritional deficiencies contributing to RLS include magnesium, calcium, potassium and/or zinc. Again, blood work is key. (If you get magnesium tested, make sure it is magnesium bound to red blood cells “mRBC” for a more accurate reading)
*Hormone imbalance is another common cause. Approximately 20% of pregnant women develop RLS, usually in the third trimester. This symptom tends to dissipate about 4 weeks after delivery of the baby. Women are more likely to have hormonal imbalances than men overall, and women are also more likely to develop RLS than men in life. Hyperthyroidism, another type of hormone imbalance, is an additional contributor.
*Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays many roles in the body, most notably in motivation and positive reinforcement of behavior. It also plays a critical role in the control of movement. So, as you might imagine, a dopamine imbalance may also play a key role in RLS. (We’ll cover dopamine deficiency in the near future.)
There also appears to be a relationship between ADD/ ADHD and restless leg syndrome. Additionally, pediatric restless leg disorder is sometimes misdiagnosed as growing pains or ADD.
*Symptoms of restless leg syndrome are common in people who have chronic kidney disease. When the kidneys are not functioning as they should, anemia, iron deficiency, and high calcium levels in the blood commonly occur. As you’ve just learned, all of those conditions exacerbate RLS.
*Hypertension, diabetes, and increased BMI (body mass index) also contribute to the incidence of restless leg syndrome. (The medications used to manage these conditions are also worthy suspects!) Uncontrolled high blood sugar often leads to peripheral nerve damage; another contributor to restless legs.
*Medication induced restless legs may be among the most common (idiopathic?) causes for developing this disorder. Every medication acts in multiple ways throughout the body. Immediate side effects of medication are fairly easy to spot, but often side effects such as restless legs creep in slowly, making it hard to pinpoint the culprit. Medications known to cause restless legs over time include:
💊Certain antihistamines
💊Psychotropics (ex: haloperidol, aripiprazole, risperidone, quetiapine, mood stabilizers)
💊Antidepressants (SSRI’s,SNRI’s, and tricyclics, ex: fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, paroxetine, imipramine, amitriptyline)
💊Some nausea medications (metoclopramide and prochlorperazine)
💊Acid reducers
💊Beta Blockers
💊Calcium channel blockers
💊Some sleep medications
I’ve talked to many pharmacy clients over the years who struggle with restless legs, and while it is a relatively benign condition, it is definitely life altering…anything that negatively affects quality sleep is! Westernized health culture is often very quick to prescribe or suggest over the counter medication to quickly solve a problem, overlooking the unintended possible consequences. Often, there is a gentler solution, but it does require ownership and a willingness to take personal responsibility for one’s own health management. There will always be a time and a place for western medicine, but it behooves us all to leave that as a last resort whenever possible.
I hope this helped someone identify their restless leg trigger(s). Next week I’ll talk about healthy options for living with RLS.

Power to Heal – part 2
Part II: But first…. A history lesson!
How can it be, that we… citizens of the USA 🇺🇸…., with practically unlimited access to western medicine, are currently among the sickest in the world? 😷😭 Study after study supports the same conclusion…
💰💰💰We spend more on healthcare for worse health outcomes than comparable countries around the world, regardless of age or income.💰💰💰
Part of the problem is the belief in the “insta” system, and how it applies to the healthcare industry.. Americans expect to go to a doctor and receive a prescription for “something”, and they are dissatisfied if the doctor sends them away without one. (not all problems are solved by pills!)
It is no longer surprising to me when a patient can neither tell me the name of their medication or even what it’s for when I talk to them at the pharmacy. They just need a refill of their “little yellow pill”. #blindtrust 😳
When we have 20% of US citizens on 5 or more prescription medications a day (often written by more than one physician), the odds of drug interactions goes up considerably. The odds of side effects and deficiencies rises exponentially as well. #playingwithfire
Prescription drug errors kill more than 100,000 Americans a year, and medical error is the 3rd most leading cause of death in the United States (3rd only to heart disease and cancer… two largely “preventable by lifestyle” diseases). An estimated 1.5 million people die each year from these top 3 causes.
Now that’s a pandemic worthy of being called a pandemic!
#whereisthemedia
We forget that regardless of our heritage, our forefathers (and fore-mama’s) used tools from nature. 🌿 The most dangerous part of living was to make it from infancy to puberty. The dangers of infancy and childhood stemmed more from malnutrition and poor sanitation than anything else with the exception of actual childbirth (a high risk situation for both mother and child).
Our ancestors were not of the “insta” world, and they were loaded with practical knowledge, intelligence, and common sense. #theoriginalsurvivors They understood that wounds and injuries (visible or not) took time to heal. They also passed down healing “recipes” from generation to generation. Scientific studies (thousands of them) now provide evidence of the mechanism of action of these herbal remedies. 🌿 Many cultures also understood that emotions were, more often than not, tied to specific illnesses. (ex: Grief is often a harbinger of lung dis-ease if not dealt with properly)….. not because of superstition but because of biology and physics.
So what happened? How did we manage to lose all of this very important information? We know we live in a “need it now” world where “fast medicine” is king. Where did “slow” medicine go, and how and why did it nearly disappear?
Have you ever heard of a guy named John D Rockefeller? He was an oil tycoon in the early 1900’s who, at one time, controlled 90% of our country’s oil.
Rockefeller was arguably the wealthiest man in the world in his time. 💰💰💰💰💰💰Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie (another tycoon of the era) had money, and they wanted more. These two men were well aware of the many healing modalities in existence in the very early 1900’s. Chiropractic care, naturopathy, homeopathy, holistic care (the most common of all) nurtured mind, body (using common to the area plants), and spirit (The USA was a strong Christian nation back then, and faith was infused into all aspects of life 🙏).
Abraham Flexner (who was neither a physician or a medical scientist) was hired by Carnegie and Rockefeller. He was a former school teacher with specialized training in psychology.
Flexner produced a report (known as Carnegie Foundation Bulletin Number Four or “The Flexner Report”) that was submitted to Congress in 1910. The report concluded that (among other things) all the natural healing modalities (which have been around since before Jesus!) were unscientific quackery and should be outlawed. It also called for the standardization of medical education, allowing only allopathic (patented medicine and medicine practiced in a modern “westernized” fashion) based medical licenses to be issued. It was a tremendous blow to naturally based medicine that is still felt to this day in the USA. 😭
Why would this be an important piece of history? Well, Rockefeller wanted more control of the medical world, and he wanted to sell the “new fangled” patented pharmaceutical drugs 💊(which coincidentally had a petroleum base). The problem was that nearly everyone was comfortable using their versions of “slow” medicine all over the country. Plant based therapeutics are not patent-able, and Rockefeller knew that in order to control the pharmaceutical industry, he would need to put the kibosh on natural remedies. The Flexner Report achieved this purpose, and nearly overnight, people had no choice but to move from “slow” medicine to “fast” medicine, and doctors had no choice but to abide by the new rules or risk being jailed or losing their license. Sadly, this is still the case today. #controlfoodandhealthandyoucontrolthepeople
Most history books paint this event in a different light. I remember reading about it in pharmacy school 30 years ago, and (in the naivety of my tender college years) thought it was quite an achievement to have so quickly modernized medicine. I just didn’t realize back then that most commonly published history is slanted towards the victors, and therefore doesn’t always reflect the entire truth.
This history is important as a segue to learning how to heal properly.
Stay tuned for Part III….. Mind over Medicine 💊.

Goji – Hard Facts
Just a little light reading this morning after chores. I am a born skeptic and curiosity is my middle name, which is probably a couple reasons why I love science so much. And because the internet provides fishy info (and/or makes truth hard to find), I lean towards good old fashioned research and book learnin’!📚
This one is terribly interesting, and it corroborates data and information I’ve learned elsewhere. Sadly, textbooks like these are pricey (you can see where I hoard and spend any extra money….. books!!) but they bear the truth that cannot be erased or distorted by the whims of the internet gods.
Got a question about the beautiful goji (aka wolfberry) berry? Let’er fly! Drop it in the comments, and if I can find the answer in one of my books, I’ll snap a pic for ya😘.

Immunity Help?
Just out of curiosity, how many of you would have raised your hand to be a literal guinea pig for a “groundbreaking” COVID vaccine trial?
Ummmmm no. Me neither.
And yet…… apparently, 15 human guinea pigs between the ages of 18 and 55 did just that.
Moderna’s ‘rona vaccine, the class favorite of Dr. Fauci (interestingly, financed by Bill Gates), had a press release this week regarding its first clinical trial on 15 healthy adults.
Three of the 15 volunteers developed Grade 3 systemic events (20% of the study subjects) when injected with the 250mcg dose.
What is a Grade 3 Systemic event?
* Per the FDA this would be defined as a health event “preventing daily activity and requiring medical intervention”.
I dug a little deeper #becauseImacuriouscat……
Grade 3 is considered a “severe reaction” that includes one or more of the following:
💉 Requires a narcotic pain reliever or prevents daily activity
Significant discomfort at rest
💉 Redness and swelling greater than 10cm ( that’s a 4inch wheal/welt)
💉 Fever between 102.1 – 104
💉 Tachycardia (fast heart beat) greater than 130beats per min (bpm)
💉 Hypertension (systolic- top number when reading blood pressure) greater than155
💉 Hypertension (diastolic – bottom number) greater than 100
💉 Hypotension (systolic- blood pressure too low this time) less than 80
💉 Respiratory Rate – greater than 25 breaths per min
💉 Nausea/ vomiting which prevents daily activity or requires outpatient IV hydration
💉 Diarrhea – 6 or more watery stools a day or requiring outpatient IV hydration
💉 Headache – significant enough to require a narcotic or prevent daily activity
💉 Fatigue – significant enough to prevent daily activity
Myalgia – significant enough to prevent daily activity.
💉 Illness- prevents daily activity and requires medical intervention
There is also a panel of labwork that falls within this category. I’ll include it here:
Because it is a trial, there are no long term studies as to the long term effects of the vaccine either on a human or their offspring. #ashotinthedark
20% of the subjects had a Grade 3 reaction. And those were healthy adults age 18-55….. wonder what that would look like in say…… 300 million people?
I personally have some questions….. 🙋♀️
* Will they be testing on children, the elderly, and the unhealthy before moving to release the vaccine to the public? After all…. (they bypassed the studies on primates and ferrets with Dr. Fauci’s blessings, so it is plausible that they will not be doing studies on children, the elderly, and the unhealthy prior to releasing the vaccine)
* How do they explain that, to date, there is no vaccine for the common cold, SARS, MERS, or Bird Flu although there has been plenty of time to find one #andtheyvebeenlooking, and yet they have been able to formulate one for CV-19 in less than 6 months?
* Prior attempts at developing COVID vaccines have been troublesome as an animal who has been vaccinated with a COVID vaccine then sickens and dies when exposed to the wild virus. 🤔 What would make this one different?
👉👉👉On February 4th, 2020 Dr. Fauci granted liability immunity to vaccine companies hoping to sell their COVID vaccine to “we the people” of the USA.
Liability immunity….. What does that mean? It means that if things go wrong with the COVID vaccine…. real wrong… real, REAL wrong 💀 …..the vaccine company would not be sued or held responsible. #hmmmmmmmm
Please, I ask you…. Is there any other industry out there that holds no culpability for a product that they provide?
Would you get on an airplane made by a company who was not legally bound to get you safely from point A ✈️ to point B ✈️ ?
Food for thought certainly.
