The Difference Between Lifespan and Healthspan
Western medicine is really good at one thing – keeping you alive no matter the cost. But how are you supposed to enjoy life if you continue to live with constant pain, incapacitated or limited in some way healthwise (physically or emotionally) or in crippling debt due to ongoing medical expenses?
It’s time to reconsider what you really want out of your life – a long lifespan or a long healthspan. The difference between the two is that lifespan denotes the length of time you live while healthspan is the number of years you spend healthy and free from chronic disease or the disabilities of aging. The beauty is that it is possible to enjoy a long lifespan AND long healthspan when you become active in managing your own health.

My name is Liz James, and as a licensed pharmacist, I was trained to support and work within the confines of the Big Three industries (Western medicine, pharmaceuticals and health insurance).
Over the years, I watched from behind the counter as my customers’ health declined while their doctors prescribed more and more medication. And like my customers, I also suffered from various health challenges that could be ‘managed’ through Western medicine.
As a licensed pharmacist, I knew the benefits of the medications prescribed to treat these conditions. Unfortunately, I also knew their dangers, especially when used simultaneously (polypharmacy). That’s why I chose to step outside my traditional pharmacy education many years ago to seek holistic solutions and alternative treatments and become well educated in them.
The lessons I learned during my journey uncovered the truths I share now. Western medicine and pharmaceuticals have their place in healthcare, but they should be reserved for emergent care – a last resort when all other methods have failed.
While I’m still a licensed pharmacist, I’m also a certified professional health coach. ( One of my clients affectionately calls me her “medical life coach”. I’ll take that! ) This allows me to provide you with accurate information on both traditional and alternative treatments which allows you to better understand your current health trajectory and together, we identify ways to correct the areas that are in need of course correction.
Improve Your Healthspan with Good Medicine
Modern medicine is usually modeled to treat the symptoms of acute or chronic disease, not the cause. That means, even with medicine, you’re rarely cured, only managed.
Symptoms are suppressed or masked by medication(s) which often creates additional problems by causing or exacerbating a deficiency or imbalance of vitamins, minerals, hormones, or enzymes. These deficiencies and imbalances cause symptoms which usually get labeled with a new “diagnosis” and that new diagnosis requires more medication, putting the individual in a never-ending cycle of pharmaceutical dependency.
By gaining a better understanding of your own health, addressing root cause(s), and understanding how the healthcare system works, it becomes much easier to correct, reduce, and perhaps even eliminate the need for medication over time. When this happens, you are stepping into living more vibrantly and have more time to focus on what you love doing.
